Indigenous peoples are the most confrontational arm of the environmental movement, and Indigenous knowledge is also crucial to addressing climate change and a just transition away from a carbon economy. Despite foregrounding the necessity of anticolonialism and decolonial praxis, however, mainstream environmentalism still pays lip service to Indigenous movements. As practitioners of Indigenous studies within movement spaces, we take seriously the challenge of calls for land return and the restoration of Indigenous sovereignty, while making international connections between the Indigenous movements in the global north and south. This talk examines what is possible when universities and popular climate movements center Indigenous calls for decolonization and justice.
