The Center for Canon Expansion and Change (CCEC) transforms the face of philosophy by expanding the philosophical canon and training educators to teach around a broader set of ideas. Through summer programs, research, and community building, CCEC champions voices across philosophy to inspire global change.
Founded in 2021 by Professors Dwight K. Lewis Jr., Jessica Gordon-Roth, and Bennett McNulty, the Center for Cannon Expansion and Change (CCEC) offers yearly summer programs to train faculty and graduate students in teaching an expanded philosophical canon. These programs include instruction on integrating new voices into syllabi, developing student-centered pedagogical tools, and fostering equitable learning environments. With support from a $500,000 grant from the Mellon Foundation, CCEC aims to expand its curriculum to include ancient, medieval, and early analytic philosophy, host symposia and conferences, and create a robust database of teaching resources. The project not only aims to transform the field of philosophy but also prepare students for challenges beyond the classroom.
The CCEC is housed in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities and is supported by the Institute for Advanced Study at the University of Minnesota with a grant from the Mellon Foundation.
