The Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) offers many interdisciplinary fellowship, research, and other funding and program opportunities for University of Minnesota faculty, staff, and students, as well as community members.
Fellowship Awards
- IAS Residential Faculty Fellowship
Spend a semester in residence at the IAS. Join a collaborative, interdisciplinary community while working intensively on your research or creative projects. Fellows meet regularly to discuss their work, build community, and exchange ideas. Eligible: All regular faculty from across the University of Minnesota.
2027–28 Fellowship Award Deadline: November 2, 2026
- Interdisciplinary Doctoral Fellowship at the IAS
Join the Institute for Advanced Study’s supportive cohort of residential fellows. Participate in workshops, share feedback, and develop your own work with the support of a mentor of your choosing. Eligible: mid-career PhD students at the University of Minnesota. This program is facilitated by the Graduate School.
2027–28 Fellowship Award Deadline (submit to IAS first): October 5, 2026
- Human in the Data Summer Graduate Fellowship
The IAS, AI Hub, and LATIS invite applications for University of Minnesota graduate student summer fellowships in the amount of $7,000 each to fund research on the humanistic implications of data and its use. This fellowship is intended to fund non-traditional scholarship and engagement work that might not normally fit within standard disciplinary graduate research. Students in the humanities, arts, and humanistic social sciences are eligible to apply.

Project Support Awards
- IAS Incubator Inquiries
Get tailored support bringing your ideas for interdisciplinary, team-based projects to a fundable state of development. The IAS works with faculty, instructors, and staff from across the University of Minnesota as they seek external funding for concepts that will become IAS-administered projects.
Deadline: Rolling
- IAS Research and Creative Collaboratives
Receive financial and administrative support for developing interdisciplinary projects or building an intellectual community. Collaborative funding often enables work that is difficult to achieve within departmental structures, such as the exploration of research through different disciplines or public engagement activities. Eligible: Faculty, students, and staff from across the University of Minnesota, and community members.

- Imagine Fund Special Events Grant
Funds are available to support large, publicly engaged events relating to the arts, humanities, or design. Eligible: Faculty and staff from across the University of Minnesota.

Graduate Assistantships
The Institute for Advanced Study occasionally offers Graduate Assistantships, or administers Assistantships offered by its supported projects. The current minimum GA rate of pay for the Institute for Advanced Study is $27.00/hr to $29.98/hr.
