The Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost invites applications from or nominations of University of Minnesota tenured faculty members for the position of Director, Institute for Advanced Study (IAS). This half-time academic leadership position leads a systemwide center whose mission is to collaborate broadly to advance scholarship and teaching, foster critical engagement with issues and ideas, and build generative relationships with larger communities locally and globally.

This academic leadership position oversees a systemwide center reporting to the Executive Vice President and Provost. Supporting the systemwide strategic plan MPact 2025, the IAS supports and encourages multidisciplinary research and curricular collaborations and advances the arts and humanities through strategic collaborations (Commitments 2.2.2 and 2.2.3), and more broadly seeks to leverage the combined strengths of the humanities, arts, and sciences.

The new director will provide direction and oversight for the IAS including its staff, operations, resources, and programs. IAS programs include research and creative collaboratives, residential fellowships, multi-partner interdisciplinary collaborations, and public programming.

The director will hold an annually renewable, half-time academic administrative appointment (Director with Faculty Rank) with an anticipated start date of August 15, 2022, or as soon thereafter as possible. Terms and conditions are negotiable, including transitional arrangements, depending upon prior commitments and responsibilities of the selected candidate. Candidates must be current tenured UMN faculty members with significant research records, experience in academic program administration, and experience in interdisciplinary inquiry and collaborative work. The Director will be compensated through a reduced course load and either salary augmentation or part-time academic administrative appointment.

The EVPP will convene a representative and inclusive search committee, chaired by University Librarian and Dean of Libraries Lisa German, to help identify and screen candidates for this University leadership position. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled, but will be reviewed beginning May 16.

To nominate a colleague, please send a letter of nomination and a brief statement of the nominee’s qualifications to search committee chair Dean Lisa German at [email protected]. To apply, please submit a letter of interest and a CV to the University of Minnesota’s online employment system: https://hr.myu.umn.edu/jobs/int/347799.

Thank you for your nominations and applications for this important position.
