Newspaper clippings become lines in a script. Photographs from 1901 become costumes. History is alive.

Umbra Search African American History hosts a conversation with local scholar-artists and Dr. Amma Y. Ghartey-Tagoe Kootin on how the stuff of archives and historical research—newspaper articles, photos, and letters—inspire and transform the creation of new works.

This is a companion event to Dr. Amma Y. Ghartey-Tagoe Kootin’s Performing the Archive: “At Buffalo,” The Creation of a New Musical. 

Scholar-Artists in conversation include Dr. Amma Y. Ghartey-Tagoe Kootin, Dr. Alexis Pauline Gumbs, and Professor Talvin Wilks.

About Dr. Amma Y. Ghartey-Tagoe Kootin: Dr. Ghartey-Tagoe Kootin leads the creative team behind AT BUFFALO, a new musical in development about the 1901 World’s Fair in Buffalo, NY where three exhibits gave radically conflicting visions of blackness in America. Dr. Ghartey-Tagoe Kootin is a professor at the University of Georgia.
