Sneakerheadz

Event Location
Crosby Seminar Room, Northrop 240 (84 Church St SE, Minneapolis)
Free and open to the public

This panel discussion looks at modern culture and collections, through the lens of the film Sneakerheadz.  Panelists include Elliott Powell (American Studies), Justin Schell (Libraries, University of Michigan), and Roger Cummings (Co-Founder of Juxtaposition Arts), and will be moderated by Dorothy Berry (Umbra Search/Givens Collection). It takes a close look at the development of sneaker culture, including how did sneakers become as prized as collectible art? From the shores of California to the congested streets of Tokyo, the film examines the cultural influence of sneaker collecting around the world, and delves into a subculture whose proud members don’t just want to admire art, they want to wear it.

The discussion precedes a free screening of the Sneakerheadz film at 7pm in the Best Buy Theater.

This event is co-presented by Umbra Search African American History and the Givens Collection of African American Literature at the University of Minnesota Libraries, and is co-sponsored by the Moving Image Studies Graduate Minor.
