Chennai is currently in the news due to a catastrophic water shortage. Because of ongoing drought, its reservoirs are dry and millions lack reliable access to water. Even hospitals lack sufficient water to operate. In this IAS Thursdays talk from October 2011, Karen Coelho, professor of anthropology at the Madras Institute of Development Studies in Chennai, delves into the history of the city and its shaping and reshaping by the changing values of land and water, as well as the politics of municipal administrative units.
