Opening Night Reception | Takeover: Morrill Hall 1969
Light refreshments will be served.
Takeover: Morrill Hall, 1969 pays tribute to the UMN protests in 1969, when approximately 70 Black students from the University of Minnesota took over Morrill Hall, the administration building housing the Office of the President. Theevent lasted 24 hours—changing the history of the University and resulting in the founding of an African American Studies department. Visit Northrop's fourth-floor gallery to learn the story of these events. Archival documents, photographs, and recordings—some publicly exhibited for the first time—depict the power of student protest.
The exhibit is copresented by Northrop, the Heritage Studies and Public History program, the Institute for Advanced Study, and the University Honors Program. It is presented as part of the 1968-1969: Historic Upheavals, Enduring Aftershocks lecture and event series, and will be on display through December 2019.
