The Minnesota Transform project, supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Just Futures higher education initiative, housed in the University of Minnesota’s Institute for Advanced Study, invites applications for a postdoctoral associate for 2021-2022. The Associate is open to scholars whose work is based in the humanities and focuses on the issues of redress, reparations, or abolition regarding racial justice and/or settler colonialism. Preference will be given to those who engage these issues in relation to higher education or universities. Expectations for this fellow are that they will (1) advance their research, (2) give at least one presentation or workshop focused on their scholarship and/or public engagement practice; (3) teach one class or lead a major public humanities initiative project that addresses historical injustice and contemporary processes of abolition, reparations, or redress; and (4) consult with and advise the Minnesota Transform leadership team.
The position offers a salary of $65,000 plus benefits for a postdoctoral associate to be appointed in the IAS from 7/1/21–6/30/22. The position is funded by grant money and for only one year.
- Doctorate received within the past five years.
- Excellent writing and analytical skills; experience in writing for different purposes and a diversity of audiences, including, but not limited to scholarly audiences.
- Strong interdisciplinary interests, skills, and experience.
- Evidence of a research agenda concerned with redress, reparations, abolition and/or reckoning.
- Flexibility, nimbleness, and creativity, with the ability to work both collaboratively and independently.
- Organizational skills that can be applied to a project with both academic and practical components.
- Ability to create collaborations with law and policy communities
- Demonstrated commitment to and experience with working with Indigenous and people-of-color communities

Minnesota Transform is a $5M higher education initiative funded by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation as part of its Just Futures initiative that will address transformational decolonial and racial justice in the University, Twin Cities, and state through public humanities projects. Minnesota Transform will collaborate with Black, Indigenous, immigrant, and refugee communities to amplify historical interpretations, create new narratives and dialogues, foster community well-being, and inform policy responses. Through our work and collaborations, Minnesota Transform will strategically broaden and deepen previously established relationships with communities, hold the University accountable for its complicities in order to pave the way for redress, and build the University’s capacity to be a site of racial justice.
