Application Deadline:

Are you interested in learning how to write public scholarship? Or how to edit and facilitate the work of a journal? Are you interested in questions of climate change, environmental justice, and our water futures? Are you interested in learning skills that might serve you in both academic and non-academic career paths? Join the Open Rivers Graduate Student Committee!

The Open Rivers Graduate Student Committee (GSC) welcomes participants from any university and any graduate program. Through the GSC, Open Rivers demonstrates our commitment to offering opportunities for graduate students to learn practical professional development skills that complement rigorous academic training. As a member of the Open Rivers Graduate Student Committee, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Develop skills related to digital media and editorial work
  • Explore the value of public scholarship for your own practice
  • Possibly publish your own work for a public audience
  • Review prominent works or events pertaining to water, place, and community
  • Edit articles and provide feedback to authors
  • Connect with interdisciplinary river-lovers
  • Attend professional development workshops on public scholarship, digital media, grant writing, StoryMaps, and more based on student interests

As a member of the GSC, you’ll have the opportunity to immediately make an impact. We work with members to shape projects that both benefit Open Rivers and align with each participants personal interests and goals.

Members of the GSC will all start their collaboration with Open Rivers by becoming familiar with the journal. We ask participants to:

  • Attend an introductory workshop on Public Scholarship (2 hours)
  • Write short (50-100 word) summaries of past articles to learn more about Open Rivers and to provide content for our promotional practices (approximately 3 hours)
  • Create a collection of public scholarship content around a theme that includes work from Open Rivers and from others publications to share with our audiences (approximately 3 hours)

After this introductory work, we collaborate with students to help you shape projects to develop skills on which you'd like to focus.

We will meet virtually approximately once a month throughout the academic year to discuss upcoming publications and potential collaborations. Including meetings, committee members will dedicate 20-30 hours throughout the academic year to write, review, edit, summarize, and organize content for a public audience. Graduate students will have the opportunity to work with an editorial team and build a network of interdisciplinary professionals who are passionate about the future of our water resources. We are looking for graduate students to serve on the committee for one year (September 2024 - June 2025), with the potential for continuation.
