As a University-wide institute reporting to the provost, the Institute for Advanced Study supports and encourages wide-ranging discovery and collaboration across and beyond the boundaries of the University of Minnesota. The IAS is pleased to launch the University Forum to engage the campus community and the public in discussion of issues critical to shaping the University in the 21st century.
How does a public land-grant research university define and act for the public good? Who speaks for the public? What are the values by which we measure the University’s contributions? How do our discoveries and artistic creations generate meaning for individuals and communities? How does the University’s mission and work align with a focus on society’s grand challenges—or ask us to reconceive the work of education and research?
These are among the invigorating questions the University Forum is designed to explore, with the goal of promoting institutional reflection and transformation. The Forum is a vital new public face for the University, a site for dialogue within our campuses, and between the University community and our many partners and constituencies across the state.
