The Institute for Advanced Study offers short-term affiliations for scholars and artists, and for independent scholarly, artistic, or community-engagement organizations not otherwise affiliated with the University of Minnesota.

Affiliated Members

Scholars and artists not otherwise affiliated with the University of Minnesota may request to be formally affiliated with the Institute for Advanced Study.
1. These requests will be reviewed by the IAS Director and the IAS Advisory Board or a committee designated by the Board.
2. Those requesting affiliation must submit a project outline, artists’ statement, or other description of the work in which they are engaging, and a curriculum vitae or resume.
3. Scholars and artists whose requests are approved will be “Affiliated Members” of the IAS.
4. Affiliated memberships are for up to six months. Affiliated members may reapply.
5. The IAS offers no financial support for its affiliated members. The IAS may offer a sponsored UMN account (email and library access).
6. If office space is available, the Director may, at her/his discretion, offer an office to an affiliated member.
7. Affiliated Members are expected to participate in the intellectual life of the Institute. This may include participation in weekly Fellows lunches, attendance at IAS public events, and participation in Research and Creative Collaboratives.
8. The affiliated member may be asked to give a public presentation at the IAS. If permissible by University regulations, the affiliated member may receive an honorarium for this presentation.
9. The affiliated member is asked to acknowledge IAS support in publications, performances, or other work that results from the time spent at the IAS or otherwise grows out of the IAS affiliated membership.

Persons wishing to request an affiliated membership should send their request to ias@umn.edu with the materials specified above attached.

Affiliated Organizations

Independent scholarly, artistic, or community engagement organizations not otherwise affiliated with the University of Minnesota may request to be formally affiliated with the Institute for Advanced Study.
1. These requests will be reviewed by the IAS Director and the IAS Advisory Board or a committee designated by the Board.
2. At least one member of the University faculty or academic staff must be involved with the group in question.
3. The missions of the IAS and outside group must be complementary. The affiliation should enrich what the IAS does in its mission of encouraging interdisciplinary and collaborative work.
4. An Organization whose request is approved will be an “Affiliated Organization” (Organization) of the IAS.
5. The Organization and the IAS will make a written agreement, based on the Organization’s initial application, that describes the affiliation.
6. The affiliation may not result in co-branding or provision of services.
7. The IAS is under no obligation to offer financial support to its Affiliated Organizations. However, the IAS may offer honoraria as appropriate to members of the Organization.
8. If office space is available, the Director may, at her/his discretion, make it available to the Organization.
9. The affiliation will initially last for one year. At the end of the year, the organization will submit a report on the past year, and may be asked to make a short presentation at an IAS Advisory Board meeting. The Organization may then apply for renewal, with terms lasting two years.
10. The Organization acknowledges IAS support in publications, performances, or other work that results from the affiliation with the IAS, with this or similar language: “We acknowledge the support of the Institute for Advanced Study.”
11. The IAS and the Affiliated Organization will address the issue of the creation of intellectual property on a case-by-case basis.
12. Affiliated Organizations are expected to contribute to the intellectual life of the Institute.

Those organizations wishing to request affiliation must submit an application. The application must come from a University of Minnesota faculty or academic staff member. The application must include the following:
1. Completed cover sheet
2. Abstract of organization description and fit with the IAS, which should not exceed 300 words
3. CV of faculty/academic staff sponsor (two pages)
4. Organization Mission and Vision
5. Description of Organization’s current project/s (one page)
6. Description of integration with research and teaching at the University of Minnesota (one page)
7. Description of organization’s membership (200 words)
8. Tentative list of affiliation-related activities (one page)

Applications should be submitted to ias@umn.edu with the materials specified above attached.
