He is Professor Emeritus of Genetics, Cell Biology and Development at the University of Minnesota. He is particularly interested in conservation biology and environmental issues.

J. Baird Callicott is Regents Professor of Philosophy at the University of North Texas. He taught an early environmental ethics course at the University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point in 1971 and environmental ethics has remained his central focus.
