lars christensenSong Dynasty Musical Thought and the Development of Early Modern China

“Although music policy was officially controlled and central to statecraft throughout the history of imperial China, historians seldom take into account music thought as a set of influential ideologies and a mirror of culture. By means of a close and contextualized analysis of a heretofore untranslated primary source from the Song Dynasty, I will examine how musical discourse participated in the political, social, and aesthetic changes that underlay the construction of a new Chinese identity and the Neo-Confucian synthesis. At the same time, I will situate the treatise within the network of speculative musico-philosophical traditions of the global Middle Ages.”
