Asian Film is globally popular in the twenty-first century. This course will familiarize students with important directors and film movements in Asian cinema. We will view and analyze the films and anime of major filmmakers from China, Japan, Hong Kong, India, Thailand, and Korea. We will acquire the critical tools to talk about film while acquainting ourselves with the historical and global movements within Asian film history. Readings on cinema and culture will provide the basis for technical and cultural specificity in our analysis.
Each week there will be a lecture and two films screened that are followed by discussion and review. Class will be held Tuesday and Thursdays, 2:30 - 5:30 pm, screenings (which are open to the public) on Wednesday evenings, 7:00 - 9:30 pm. If you have questions please contact Professor Marran at marran@umn.edu.
