Human migrations and exchanges on every continent have long relied on inland waterways—rivers and lakes. This presentation narrates the exploitation of inland waterways through the various types of watercraft, their social purposes, and the portages and canals that extended waterways. The interpretation highlights the continuity of public works in human history.
Keynote address of Grasping Water: Rivers and Human Systems in China, Africa, and North America.
