Dr. Scott Johnson will present an overview of ancient Maya salt production and trade. Although we know that salt was one of the chief exports of Yucatan, it is frustratingly difficult to identify archaeologically. This talk will address what we know today and where salt studies are going in the near future, as well as Johnson’s current field research into the salt industry on Yucatan’s north coast at the site of Emal, one of the primary centers of salt production.

While in the Twin Cities, Scott Johnson spoke with Brent Woodfill in an interview by Phyllis Messenger.
