The Institute for Advanced Study will convene an interdisciplinary Sawyer Seminar “Making the Mississippi: Formulating new water narratives for the 21st century and beyond,” to develop a new intellectual framework and supporting narratives to theorize new ways of thinking about water systems.

The faculty seminar, which will take place during 2014-15, will be informed by readings in contemporary environmental history, and readings from narrative traditions drawn from three case studies of human interaction with the river: Indigenous relational ontologies, the Green American tradition, and the literature of science. Interested faculty are invited to attend an introductory meeting on Thursday, November 14, 11:30-1, Nolte 235. Please RSVP to Phyllis Messenger,

The Sawyer Seminar grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation includes funding for one Postdoctoral Fellow and two Graduate Fellows. Applications for these positions are available at Priority deadlines: Postdoctoral fellowship applications are due January 15, Graduate Fellowship applications are due February 1.
