Matteo Ricci: His Map and Music Summer 2013

IAS Director Ann Waltner and the Ricci World Map of 1602, owned by the James Ford Bell Trust and loaned to the University of Minnesota for the benefit of the James Ford Bell Library, are central players in the featured cultural performance of the 8th International Convention of Asia Scholars convening in Macao in June of 2013.

Dr. Waltner is an artistic director and narrator for “Matteo Ricci: His Map and Music,” which debuted in Beijing in 2010 and has been performed here on the campus of the University of Minnesota and at early music festivals in Boston and Indianapolis. The multimedia production tells the story of Jesuit missionary Matteo Ricci and his interactions with Chinese society in the late Ming dynasty (1368-1644.)

The performance blends period music from Europe and Asia, played by the ensemble ¡Sacabuche! (under the direction of Dr. Linda Pearse, Professor of Music, Mount Allison University) and visiting Chinese musicians, with images of the map and narrations in English and Chinese.
