The Closet and the Cul de Sac: Suburbanization and the Politics of Straightness in Postwar California

Since the 1970s conflicts over gay rights have moved to the center of American politics. This presentation ties the outbreak of the “culture wars” over homosexuality to the expansion of the federal government, suburbanization, and the political mobilization of parents in the three decades after World War II. Focusing on the San Francisco Bay Area, it traces the parallel rise of Gay Liberation and the Religious Right by focusing on shifting housing patterns in the postwar metropolis.

Clayton Howard received his Ph.D. in History from the University of Michigan in 2010. He is currently a visiting lecturer at the University of New Hampshire in Durham.

Organized by the Design, Architecture, and Culture Group of Quadrant.
