Project: “Beyond the Culture Wars: How Ordinary Citizens Use Religious, Legal, and Scientific Repertoires to Understand Contemporary Social Dilemmas”
Working jointly with Penny Edgell, Hull used the semester at IAS to work on revising a grant proposal for resubmission to NSF for a new project examining how ordinary Americans form their views on controversial social issues. Feedback from NSF reviewers urged them to expand their reading and thinking into new literatures and subfields. According to Hull and Edgell, presenting their work to the other IAS fellows for discussion helped them open up their research questions. This strengthened their grant resubmission by exploring new ways of thinking and crossing disciplinary boundaries in their reading and writing.
