Agri-Food Film Series: “Julie & Julia”

May 6, 2010IASEvents0

In Julie & Julia (dir. Nora Ephron, 2009, 123 min.), Julia Child’s (Meryl Streep) story of her start in the cooking profession is intertwined with blogger Julie Powell’s (Amy Adams) 2002 challenge to cook all the recipes in Child’s first book, and both women take the opportunity to reexamine their lives, their relationships and their careers.

Please join us for a discussion after the film with Kevin Kathman and Tracey Deutsch.

Kevin Kathman is Chef at Barbette Restaurant. He recently moved to Barbette from Restaurant Max. A graduate of the New England Culinary Institute, he interned for three years at the French Laundry, later became sous chef of Napa’s Pinot Blanc and then was stagier at Gordon Ramsey in London, Arpege in Paris, and the hotel Veluous in Venlo Holland. He has the distinction of having cooked for Julia Child while at the French Laundry. Tracey Deutsch is Assistant Professor of History and author of the just released Building a housewife’s paradise: gender, politics and American grocery stores in the twentieth century.

The Agri-foods reading group has organized a series of films on food throughout the 2009-10 academic year. Members of the group will facilitate a short (approx. 30 min.) discussion after each film.
