“Ashesh Barsha, Unending Monsoon” – Ananya Dance Theatre, 5/23/2009

Ananya Dance Theatre and the IAS Performance and Social Justice Collaborative present excerpts from a new work, Ashesh Barsha, Unending Monsoon

Arid, Bare, Windswept: Ashesh Barsha, Unending Monsoon is a danced response to a world gone mad through the overconsumption of electricity, energy, and natural resources. Choreographed by Artistic Director Ananya Chatterjea and performed by the fierce dancers of Ananya Dance Theatre, Ashesh Barsha is the third and final piece of the trilogy on environmental justice, and explores unanswered questions of reparation, the mismanagement of hurricanes and tsunamis, and a world where human connectivity is lost and indigenous knowledges eroded. Working through images of simultaneous floods and droughts, and journeying through untold stories of oppressed communities suffering from global climate devastation, Ashesh Barsha raises questions about notions of progress and its human cost, and dances a call to rethink our relationship to each other and the larger eco-system we inhabit.

Concept and Choreography: Ananya Chatterjea
Score: Shubha Mudgal and Aneesh Pradhan
Environmental Justice Researchers and Collaborators: Shalini Gupta and Cecilia Martinez
Cosponsored by the Pedagogy and Theater of the Oppressed Conference
