“It Takes Two to Tango: An Exploration of Argentine Tango through Performance and Analysis” – presentation by Bob Barnes and Emily McManus, 1/30/08

January 30, 2008IASEvents0

This lecture-recital will evaluate the ways in which Argentine tango, as a dance and musical form, embodies elements of an Argentine historical and cultural identity. It will do so through two primary means: an analytical exploration of the cultural and social history of tango, and a performance-guided exploration of the musical evolution of the tango. The former will address issues surrounding the construction of an historical narrative, the popularization and appropriation of tango by an American and European public and later the Peron administration of 1946-55, and the increasing commoditization of a “tanguero” identity in the global market. The latter will demonstrate the evolution of musical form and meter, instrumentation, and performance techniques.

Copious musical examples will be performed by Bob Barnes, bandoneón player and leader of the Twin Cities’ Mandragora Tango Orchestra. Barnes will be joined by Emily McManus, a graduate student in ethnomusicology specializing in tango. This event is presented in conjunction with the performance of Estampas Portenas, at Northrop, 7:30 p.m. on January 31.
