East Asia Seminar Series: Subtitling Abusively: The Case of ‘Memories of Agano’ — a talk and screening with Markus Nornes, November 9

November 9, 2007IASEvents0

How can we translate the absence of subtitles? Director SATO Makoto decided not to add Japanese subtitles to his documentary ‘Memories of Agano’; this was a radical decision, as his subjects spoke in a dialect few Japanese could understand outside of the Niigata mountains. His strategy was to direct spectator/auditors from WHAT lives and living spaces. Sato asked me to subtitle the film in English. How is one to translate a film that domestic audiences could hardly understand? Abusively, of course. Markus Nornes is assocaite professor of Screen Arts and Cultures and Japanese Studies at the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor. This event is open to anyone interested. Light lunch will be served. Cosponsored by The Consortium for the Study of the Asias, and The Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies.
