Project title: “Inscribing the Real: Chinese Cinema from the Silent Era to the 21st Century”
Jason McGrath began writing on his book project and presented “Realism, Performance, and Media Spectacle: The Deaths of Ruan Lingyu,” at the Mass Culture Workshop, University of Chicago, in May. During his fellowship, he was offered a contract by Stanford University Press to publish his first book, Postsocialist Modernity: Chinese Cinema, Literature, and Criticism in the Market Age, and was able to complete and submit the final manuscript while in residence at the IAS. It was published in 2008. Professor McGrath was made a McKnight Land Grant Professor from 2008-2010.
