Scholars, Scrolls, and Scandals: The Dead Sea Scrolls and the History of Judaism: A Lecture by Lawrence Schiffman, 5/17/07

The discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls has revolutionized our picture of the early history of Judaism. With the publication of the enitre scrolls collection, it is now possible to draw conclusions from this unique trove of ancient documents. Lawrence Schiffman discusses the discovery of the scrolls and their unearthing in Qumran, the controversy attending their publication, and the content and historical significance of the texts. Lawrence H. Schiffman is chair of New York University’s Skirball Department of Hebrew and Judaic Studies and the Ethel and Irvin A. Edelman Professor of Hebrew and Judaic Studies. he is also a member of the NYU Center for Near Eastern Studies and Center for Ancient Studies. Part of the international team that published the Dead Sea Scrolls, he is the author of ‘Reclaiming the Dead Sea Scrolls’ and many other books and articles about the scrolls and about Judaism in Late Antiquity. He has appeared on many news programs and documentaries to discuss the scrolls, and currently appears on the popular A&E educational series “Mysteries of the Bible”. He is also editor-in-chief of the Center for online Judaic Studies and past president of the Association for Jewish Studies.
