“‘Bowling Alone’ or Acting Together: The Structural Basis of Local Civic Action” – A Lecture by Douglas McAdam, 9/13/06

September 13, 2006IASEvents0

Presentation by Douglas McAdam, Professor of Sociology, Stanford University. In a widely discussed 2000 book, political scientist Robert Putnam claimed that the American social fabric has frayed as we have become increasingly disconnected from one another and our social structures, which he said was exemplified by the growth of people “bowling alone” rather than in bowling leagues. Professor McAdam will present the preliminary results of an ambitious long-term effort to better understand variation in local collective action, using data on dozens of community areas in Chicago from 1970 to 2000. These results allow for an interesting conceptual and empirical contrast with Putnam’s “Bowling Alone.” Light refreshments will be served.
